Watch and Pray

Colossians 4:2-18  

Intro: Watch and Pray  

  • Gethsemane: Mat 26:41, Mar 14:38, End Times: Luk 21:36 

  1. Context 

  1. Paul is under house arrest, likely in Rome 

  1. Geography: Colosse – modern day Turkey 

  1. Writing against false teachers 

  1. Gnostics: matter is evil, spirit is good, need special knowledge 

  1. Judaizers – must become a Jew before you can be a Christian   

  1. Prayer vv2-4 1The 5:16-18 

  1. Pray with devotion 

  1. Be Watchful: no slacking off or getting distracted 

  1. Be Thankful 

  1. Pray for the Kingdom  

  1. Witnessing vv5-6         1Pet 3:15 

  1. Watch your behavior 

  1. Always be ready 

  1. Watch your language 

  1. Ten Examples vv7-17            1Cor 12:27, 2Tim 4:10  

  1. Ten names mentioned Mark: each with different accomplishments & struggles 

  1. Church is a body, each with different talents 

  1. Some Jewish Christians, some Gentile Christians  

  1. Authors: Mark writes Mark, Luke writes Luke and Acts 

  1. Leaders: Epaphras founds church at Colosee 

  • Aristarchus likely bishop in Syria, Archippus likely bishop in Laodicea.  

  1. Deserters/Runaways: Mark and Demas each desert Paul at different times. 

  1. Mark tries again and is reconciled; Demas apparently does not  

  1. Onesimus is a new believer and a runaway slave (Philemon next week) 

  1. Martyrs: Five of the ten were martyred for their faith 

  • Mark, Luke, Aristarchus, tradition includes Epaphras and Archippus
